Corrections

  • In my notes column for July 2, I wrote that Georgia mascot UGA VI was flown from Athens to Savannah for burial. It was actually the other way around. The bulldog was buried at Sanford Stadium.

    An uphill climb

Thanks to e-mailer Joshua, who after sharpening up his research pencil, issues the following report:

"I love your blog, especially the stats. Here a few that I came up with dealing with all time records.

    Most losses = 19 (1989)
    2nd most losses = 13 (1927, 1967, 1974)
    Most home losses = 7 (1923, 1967)
    Most losses at Rupp Arena = 5 (1989, 2006)
    Last season without 20 wins = 1990 (14-14)
    Last losing season = 1989 (13-19)

UK is 6-7. We have at least 17 games remaining counting 1 in the SEC tournament. We have 8 home games remaining. We are currently 6-4 at home. Here is what UK would have to do to avoid beating or matching those records:

Most losses = go 6-11 the rest of the year (12-18)
2nd most losses = go 12-5 the rest of the year (18-12)
Most home losses = go 6-2 at home the rest of the year (12-6)
Most losses at Rupp = go 8-0 at Rupp (14-4)
    Avoid losing season = go 9-8 (15-15)

    Continue the 20 win streak = go 14-3 (20-10)

I don't think most people realize that this team is probably going to set some new lows for UK."

Interesting stats but they need one correction. 2nd most losses is 14 in 1990, meaning UK will have to go 11-6 the rest of the way to finish with 13 losses (a number also hit in 1985 and 2006 as well as the three years listed above).

Both UK and UL look horrible. The typical UL play is a three point shot that draws iron and zero rebounding. How does Rick intend to win like this? The typical UK play, walk with the ball and turn it over. How does Billy intend to win like this? I also like the way UK players tackle the opposition, we get two sports for the price of one. Thak God for Rich Brooks. He should coach both football and basketball, one coach for two sports, just like the real old days! Mitch should be part of the 3% cuts in sate government, Vandy does not have and AD, why does UK need an AD? Rich Brooks deserves all of Mitch's compensation. When will Billy get a contract????

"They've got talent, but they've lost to some people that (the fans) don't think he should lose to," Pitino said. "He's a first-year coach and he can coach. He can recruit ... It's silly to judge a person when he first comes in because you're not hiring a miracle worker. You're hiring someone that is going to get the job done in the long haul (ten years no contract)."

Pitino loves Gillespie and wants him to keep doing what he is doing, because
Gillespie is very predictable and Rick can easily beat him. The Big East coaches are on to Rickyball and know what to do. Gillespie does not.

I don't like Pitino personally because he is an obnoxious New Yorker who sees college as pro-prep, not education. Also he is a sharpie who knows how to sucker a rube.
